چکیده

We detect 1.2mm continuum emission from dust in the gravitationally lensed Lyman break galaxy MS1512+36-cB58. Our detected flux is surprisingly low: relative to local starburst galaxies, cB58 appears to produce somewhat less far-IR emission than its UV reddening predicts. After comparing several different estimates of the source’s dust content, we conclude that the apparent discrepancy is most likely related to uncertainty in its UV spectral slope. Alternate scenarios to account for a far-IR “deficit” which rely on a high dust temperature or differential magnification are less satisfactory. Our result underscores one of the risks inherent in characterizing the cosmic star formation history from rest-UV data alone.

The Ultraviolet - Far Infrared Energy Budget of the Gravitationally Lensed

A 2-hour service-mode SCUBA observation of the gravitationally-lensed Lyman break galaxy MS 1512–cB58 resulted in a 3σ upper limit of 3.9 mJy at 850μm. A comparison of this upper limit with values expected from rest-UV/optical measurements of extiction suggests that dust temperature (Td) and/or emissivity index (β) in cB58 may be substantially higher than is seen in local galaxies, or that the ...

Medium - resolution spectroscopy of FORJ 0332 - 3557 : Probing the interstellar medium and stellar populations of a lensed Lyman - break galaxy at z = 3 . 77 ⋆

We recently reported the discovery of FORJ0332-3557, a lensed Lyman-break galaxy at z = 3.77 in a remarkable example of strong galaxy-galaxy gravitational lensing. We present here a medium-resolution rest-frame UV spectrum of the source, which appears to be similar to the well-known Lyman-break galaxy MS1512-cB58 at z = 2.73. The spectral energy distribution is consistent with a stellar populat...

Dust emission model of Lyman-break galaxies

Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) contain a non-negligible amount of dust. Takeuchi et al. (2003a) (T03) constructed a model of the infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) for very young galaxies by taking into account the dust size distribution in the early stage of galaxy evolution, which can be different from that of present-day evolved galaxies. We applied T03 model to LBGs and constructed th...

Rest Frame Optical Spectra of Lyman Break Galaxies: Other Lensing Arcs around MS1512-cB58

We have obtained near-infrared spectra of two images of the galaxy at z=2.72 which is gravitationally lensed by the foreground cluster MS1512+36. The brighter arc, cB58, is an image of only the nucleus and the southern half of the background galaxy, while the fainter image, A2, encompasses the entire background galaxy. Thus the gravitational lensing provides spatial resolution on a smaller scal...

Resolved Spectroscopy of a Gravitationally Lensed L ∗ Lyman - break Galaxy at z ∼ 5

We exploit the gravitational potential of a massive, rich cluster at z = 0.9 to study the internal properties of a gravitationally lensed galaxy at z=4.88. Using high resolution HST imaging together with optical (VIMOS) and near-infrared (SINFONI) Integral Field Spectroscopy we have studied the rest-frame UV and optical properties of the lensed galaxy seen through the cluster RCS0224-002. Using...
